Summer Hair Care: Top Tips

10th May 2015 | Hair

Top Tips for Summer Hair Care

Just as the sun damages your skin, it can damage your hair too. Saltwater and chlorine can also take it’s toll on hair. So just a few short weeks into summer you’ll start to notice that your hair that has been shiny and easy to manage, suddenly becomes a nightmare to handle, plus it looks & feels tried.

The damage is most obvious when we see colour-treated hair becoming faded, bleached, and brassy and even hair that has not got any color will suffer from sun-induced damage. The UV rays of the sun cause hair to dry out and rough up the normally smooth cuticle, or outer layer, of the hair.

Frizz Factor

Obvious really, but because you hair is much drier it is much more likely to suffer from a summer problem that’s even more irritable than the midges…and that’s FRIZZ!

The reason behind the frizz is because your dry hair soaks up the extra humidity in the air, causing the hair shaft to swell and this leads to breaks in the cuticle, resulting in puffed up hair, which goes every direction you don’t want it to.

Swimming Damage

Swimming can also cause damage to your hair. That plunge in the pool result in the chlorine stripping your hair of its natural protective oils. In particular if you are blonde you’ll start to notice that your hair takes on an greenish tint. This is caused by the copper molecules and other pool chemicals that bind to the protein in the hair shaft.

A dip in the ocean can be equally damaging. The salt content in seawater will draw water out of your hair & skin, I’m sure you’ve all felt that dry gritty feeling on your skin!So all in all that dip in the water can be a nightmare for your hair!

Tips for Healthy and Gorgeous Summer Hair

So with all that said, summer doesn’t have to be the season of nightmare hair and with some extra care your hair can look great every day, despite the summer doing it’s best to damage your beautiful locks. We have put together some top tips that we hope will help.

Start summer with a trim. This will remove any split ends and revitalise your style. Due to the speed of hair growth in the summer, you might also want to consider another trim 4 weeks apart through out the summer.

Try and shield your hair from the sun. Applying a hair care product that contains UV filters can help considerably, At A Salon Called Fish we would recommend products such as Joico’s K Pak Color Therapy Dry Oil, which can be applied during the day to help stave off the damage. These UV protecting products can help reduce damage from the sun and help keep colour-processed hair from fading.

Take steps before taking a dip. If you drench your hair with clean water or leave-in conditioner, it won’t absorb as much saltwater or pool chemicals, so reducing the effects that both the saltwater & the chlorine rich water of the pool will have on your hair. Also, be sure to rinse you hair when you’ve finished in the water and apply products like Joico’s K Pak Clarifying Shampoo, which helps eliminate the effect the pollutants will have on your hair.

Switch to a moisturising shampoo and conditioner. You may be washing your hair more frequently to deal with summer’s sweat and grime, so one way of ensuring that you keep your healthy is to use products that help boost the moisture content in your hair. We recommend Joico’s Moisture Recovery, this product is perfect at helping keep you hair in tip top condition through the summer months.

Skip the hot tools. At least once or twice a week try and give your hair a break from dryers, straighteners and curling tongs. The extra toll the heat takes on your hair, when already fighting against dryness can be damaging.

Stop the frizz. Hair that’s healthy and well-maintained is your best defense against frizz. However, if you suffer really bad from frizzy hair there is no need to worry as the solution could be Kebelo. We have written a blog about Kebelo before, when we talked about the winter weather, but Kebelo has exactly the same benefits when it comes to protecting hair from Frizz during the summer.

We hope that these tips we at least get you on your way with summer hair care, but as aways, if you are worried about your hair or simply need some advice on how to care for your hair this summer, then please come and visit us in the salon or contact us for and appointment – where we will be more than happy to help put your mind at rest.
